Welcome to Thistledowne
Thistledowne (with an e) UK is a modern family home with 3 bedrooms sleeping 5, just a two minute stroll from Sunderland’s National Glass Centre and the Anglo Saxon church of St Peter’s built in AD 674. The house is located in a very quiet area of the city within walking distance of the Stadium of Light and a minute or so on foot from the University of Sunderland Sir Tom Cowie campus and the David Puttnam Media Centre. The house is close to both river and coast with the marina and Roker beach nearby.
Thistledowne can be booked on Airbnb or via this website with secure credit/debit card payment using Stripe. Stay 3 or more days and get free pass to Beamish Open Air Museum.
The house is suitable for both business people who prefer to self-cater and those with a young family seeking just that little more space than the average hotel room.
There is off road parking for one car and room for another on the road in front of the house. A regular bus service runs from the university to the city centre six days a week although the centre can be reached by walking along the river path and over Wearmouth Bridge in about 20 minutes. The house is situated a 15 minute walk from St Peter's Metro station. The sea to sea (C2C) cycle route finishes on Roker beach (15 minute stroll) and the cycle route follows the nearby path along the river.
Thistledowne is well placed for exploring the surrounding countryside, coast and attractions such as Hartlepool's Maritime Experience and Beamish North of England Open Air Museum.
As for other cities in the area: you can reach Durham City by bus from the Park Lane bus station in the centre of Sunderland and access to Newcastle is easy via the local Metro service. If you wish to go further afield there is a direct Sunderland to London service run by Grand Central trains which goes via York if you fancy a trip to the Railway Museum.
We have a website for our guests which will eventually incorporate information on how to use the household appliances, when to put the bins out, information on the area etc. which we hope our guests will not only find useful but will add their own photos, comments etc. to.
For those wondering why the house is called Thistledowne, it is named after the last ship launched in Sunderland to be Sunderland built, Sunderland owned, Sunderland powered and Sunderland crewed.
